About

The Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) has a rich history with its 100+ years of regulating between 20 to 25% of the consumer economy. This blog explores this history through the major events, amusing stories, and the past’s continued impact on current events.

My name is John Johnson, and I’m a regulatory attorney at Shook, Hardy & Bacon where I counsel and represent clients regarding FDA and other agencies involving the regulation of food, drugs, medical devices, cosmetics, and consumer products. I help clients manage issues such as how a mentholated cough drop is labeled and registered as a drug product, but then made according to the food manufacturing regulations. I also help clients engage with the regulators in a way that appreciates the difference between an inspector’s observations, a compliance officer’s decision, and recommendations for headquarters. Through it all I seeks to combine his passions for history, law, science, and product together as he works with clients.

If you must know, my favorite court case involved the legal question of when is a lot of canned asparagus “too woody” to no longer be considered “food.”
